Whiskey has always been a spirit that captivates palates and there are many glass options that allow you to experience the richness of the various whiskey drinks on offer. Using the right glass can make a real difference to your drinking experience, and a good whiskey glass should enhance the nose and taste of a whiskey. So when thinking about which glass to use, what is it that you need to consider?
The best glasses complement the whiskey. For us the three main components of a whiskey glass are:
1. Appearance;
2. Feel; and
3. Drinkability
So which glasses should you consider for your Whiskey? Here are what we think:
The Rocks Glass/Whiskey Tumbler
An old fashioned glass that is the "go to" for serving and experiencing whiskey. Incredibly versatile you will find with this glass you can serve serve whiskey neat, on the rocks, or in whiskey cocktails. You will also find a rounded rocks glass which allows for has a more spherically shaped base which is perfect for an ice sphere.
The Hi-ball Glass
Hi-ball glasses, named for the cocktail of the same title, are tall glasses which can be used for serving whiskey cocktails over ice. If you prefer mixed drinks, then a highball glass might be the right choice. These glasses are tall and thin, with a narrow opening that keeps the mixer from watering down your whisky.
Shot Glass
Shot glasses are meant for drinking a small amount of whiskey quickly and without ice. When you need to measure and serve liquor, or serve a small amount quickly, shot glasses are the easy option. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and many whisky drinkers prefer the small pours these glasses allow.
Snifter Glass
A Snifter glass, which is also known as a brandy bowl or a balloon glass, caters to seasoned whiskey drinkers who want to savor the full complexity of their whiskey. The snifter glass is a short, stemmed glass with a wide bottom and narrow top. The slightly ballooned shape highlights and almost magnifies the color of the spirit while providing the perfect shape to swirl the drink in the glass.
Glencairn Glass
This really is the gold standard in a whiskey glass and is the glass endorsed by the Scotch Whiskey Association. It has been specifically designed to taste the whisky. They feature a wide bottom to encourage warming and swirling while showing off the color of the whiskey. This shape is perfect for focusing the aromas of the whisky. By nosing the whisky, you'll better appreciate the flavour profile of the whisky.
